Fraud Awareness Learning Points

1. Staff should take appropriate steps, to independently verify that unsolicited emails are genuine before opening any attachments. Where the email cannot be verified, staff should not open any attachment or link and should report the email through the appropriate channels.

2. Staff are reminded that any IT-type tasks should be routed through the organisation’s ITS in the first instance. Personal information about any individual should never be disclosed unless the caller’s identity and authority to have the information can be confirmed.

3. Staff should always remain vigilant for such false emails seeking to change banking details. The authenticity of requests of this nature should be independently checked before actioning – not by using the number / email address contained in the email).

4. Staff are reminded that HSC system passwords must always comply with your organisation’s IT Security policy. Staff should never reveal their login or password details; leave their computers unlocked when unattended; or allow confidential information to be openly available to others.

5. Remember. If you suspect fraud, DOING NOTHING IS NOT AN OPTION. Attempting to obtain evidence yourself could call into question the validity of the evidence and may damage potential prosecution of the case. You should report your concerns through the appropriate channels, your Line Manager, your Head of Service, your organisation’s Fraud Liaison Officer, the HSC Fraud Hotline (the number is 0800 096 33 96), or the HSC Counter Fraud Service – the CFS Website can help (https://cfps.hscni.net).
